Eco-Ecolo and Neotrópica execute second phase of project about conservation and sustainable use of Mangroves of Benin and Costa Rica On March 24th 2010 was held in Fundecooperación, a press conference for the presentation of the first results of the project executed by Neotrópica Foundation from Costa Rica and Eco-Ecolo NGO from Benin within the framework of the Programme for the South-South Cooperation.

The participants in this activity were Claudia Amengankpoe, Executive Director of Eco-Ecolo; Bernardo Aguilar, Executive Director of Neotrópica Foundation; Marianella Feoli, General Manager of Fundecooperación para el Desarrollo Sostenible and Juan Carlos Crespo, President of the Executive Board of Neotrópica Foundation.

The activities executed in both countries are reciprocal and aim to contribute to the sustainable management and the conservation of biological resources of mangrove and lagoon ecosystems in Costa Rica and Benin.

According to Claudia Amengakpoe, this project has helped communities in Benin to obtain economic benefits through the development of sustainable productive activities. The activities executed in Benin are focussed on reforestation, environmental awareness and trainings on sustainable use of the mangroves.

Bernardo Aguilar explained that awareness activities are oriented to adults and children, through the creation of Environmental Clubs. Also one of the key aspects of the implementation strategy is that the active participation of organizations as ASOPEZ, Coopemangle and a youth group of young local nature guides, on reforestation activities and as facilitators in the workshops.

The main benefited communities are Mogos, Bahía Chal, San Juan, Rincón, Puerto Escondido and La Palma, located in the Dulce Gulf.
