Dr. Maria Luisa Avila, Minister of Health, and Ms. Chinchilla, signed the law which was recently approved by the Legislative Assembly.
The transfer center was built with donations from the Government of the Netherlands through Fundecooperación as part of the South-South Cooperation Program, and the Government of Japan, JAICA. The donor countries Netherlands and Japan were represented by their distinguished Ambassadors, Mr. Matthias Van Bonzel and Mr. Hidekazu Yamaguchi.
The transfer center has the state of the art in equipment and has been designed under the supervision of the representatives of JAICA and Fundecooperación through the project lead organization, ACEPESA (Asociación Centroamericana para la Salud, Economia y el Ambiente). The transfer center is the first of several centers that the Municipality of San Jose plans to build in the future as part of its waste management system and its efforts to protect the environment and public health.
The people of Hatillo and the enterprises in this district will be able to take their recyclable materials to the center (glass, carton and paper, tetra-brick boxes, aluminum, and newspaper) for the processing and transfer to companies that use these materials as raw materials: Kimberly Clark, Florida Ice and Farm, Cerveceria Costa Rica, among many others. This imitative not only provides a service to the community of Hatillo it also will produce savings in the waste management costs that the Municipality of San Jose must pay for disposal in the registered landfills.
